Associate Announcement – September 2019
The partners are very pleased to announce that Jonathan Frydman and Mark Barrett have joined the firm’s Toronto office; Zoe Klassen, Brian Lee, and Viola Winterton have joined the firm’s Vancouver office; and Jakub Ksiazek has joined the firm’s Calgary office.

Jonathan has significant experience defending insurers in a variety of areas, including tort motor vehicle claims, slip and fall accidents, bad faith claims, claims involving allegedly defective products, as well as commercial general liability work. He also has experience handling fire, wind, water and hail losses, both in pursuit and defence of subrogated claims, as well as first party claims.
Jonathan regularly appears before Masters and Judges of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. He also has experience advocating at the Divisional Court level.
Jonathan is a recent graduate of the Intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop, offered by Osgoode Professional Development. Jonathan graduated from Western University with a B.Sc. (Hons.) in physiology and psychology in 2005 and received his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2010. He was called to the Ontario bar in 2011.
Prior to joining the firm in 2019, Jonathan practiced with a well- respected insurance defence firm.

Mark received his Hons. B.A. (summa cum laude) from McMaster University in 1986. He earned an M.A. from McMaster University in 1988 and his LL.B. at the University of Toronto in 1994. Mark was called to the Bar in 1996.
Prior to joining DWF, Mark was a partner at a Toronto litigation boutique law firm where he gained extensive experience in providing a wide range of insurance coverage advice and guidance and in defending a wide variety of insurance-related claims.
Mark provides insurance coverage advice and guidance to property and casualty insurers on a wide variety of claims. He also litigates coverage disputes involving bodily injury and property damage liability claims, sexual abuse claims, first party property claims.
Mark also has acted in the defence of various professional liability, products liability, personal injury and institutional sexual abuse claims.

Prior to joining DWF in 2019, Zoe completed her articles at a boutique litigation firm and practiced general commercial litigation at a regional firm. Zoe has appeared before BC’s Supreme Court and Provincial Court.
Zoe received both her law degree and her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature from the University of British Columbia.
While at law school, Zoe competed in the Laskin Moot, a bilingual advocacy competition dealing with a constitutional/administrative law issue. Zoe was also involved with the UBC Law Review and served as the Editor-in-Chief (Editorial).

Since his call to the British Columbia Bar in 2016, Brian has been practicing exclusively in the area of insurance law.
Prior to joining DWF, Brian acted as Legal Counsel for a large Canadian insurer. He advised adjusters, claims examiners, and claims managers on all aspects of a litigated insurance claim. In doing so, he has successfully represented clients in both the Provincial Court of British Columbia and the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Brian has also achieved favourable results through numerous mediations and settlement negotiations.
Brian holds a Juris Doctor and a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours, specialization in Finance, both from the University of British Columbia. During his time in law school, he has extensively volunteered his time with the school’s legal clinic, the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program. Brian is currently pursuing his Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation to better serve his clients in the insurance industry.

Viola joined DWF’s Vancouver office as an associate in 2019, after being called to the British Columbia Bar.
She is a South African lawyer with extensive experience in personal injury litigation, specializing in complex bodily injuries.
Prior to joining the firm, Viola completed her articles at a national personal injury law firm in Vancouver.
Viola is a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces in South Africa and a member of the Law Society of British Columbia.
She enjoys the serenity of BC, wine tasting, and the company of her miniature dachshund.

Jakub Ksiazek is a skilled litigator with considerable experience in prosecuting and defending a broad variety of claims, including contract, personal injury claims, professional negligence cases, investor fraud, construction claims, and other matters.
During his fourteen years of practice, Jakub has successfully represented hundreds of clients in matters of varying complexity, ranging from simple disputes to complex and lengthy multi-party proceedings. This comprehensive background allows Jakub to formulate and deliver sound, objective, and practical advice and strategy to all of his clients.
Jakub regularly appears before all levels of the Alberta Courts. He has chambers, trial, and appellate experience, having conducted numerous applications and a number of trials and appeals. He has also appeared before the Alberta Securities Commission.
In addition to traditional litigation, Jakub has successfully led or participated in several arbitrations. He has significant experience in alternate dispute resolution and in negotiating settlements, having skillfully represented clients in many Court assisted or private mediations.
Prior to joining DWF, Jakub ran his own litigation practice, and spent four years tutoring second year law students studying Civil Procedure at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law.
